12/28/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Washington Capitals will aim for their sixth straight win at home and third in a row overall, as they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs for this evening's matchup at Verizon Center.
The Capitals, who have an amazing 14-1-1 record as the host this year, have won their last five tilts on home ice. Washington has also notched back-to- back wins and recorded victories in seven of its last eight outings overall.
Washington's most-recent victory came at home on Friday night as the Caps edged Buffalo, 3-2. Alex Ovechkin scored a highlight reel goal in the third period which turned out to be the game-winner for the Caps.
Thomas Vanek's 25th goal of the year cut Washington's lead to 2-1 early in the third, but Ovechkin showed why he is the reigning league MVP with a great individual effort around the midway point of the final period.
After breaking out of his own zone, Ovechkin tipped a pass to himself while turning around a Buffalo defender at the blue-line. He then unleashed a hard shot and fell to the ground while the puck sailed past goaltender Patrick Lalime.
Boyd Gordon and Viktor Kozlov also scored while Jose Theodore turned back 22- of-24 shots for the Capitals, who lead the Southeast Division with 47 points.
Washington will close out the 2008 calendar year on the road, as it visits Buffalo on Tuesday. The Caps will then return home and begin a four-game homestand with a matchup against Tampa Bay on New Year's Day.
When the Maple Leafs beat Atlanta, 6-2, this past Monday it was the club's fifth win in six games. Toronto has since dropped back-to-back games and was outscored by a combined 12-3 margin in those setbacks.
After getting slammed 8-2 by visiting Dallas on Tuesday, the Leafs were handed a 4-1 setback Friday night on Long Island. Bill Guerin scored twice for 400 career goals to lead the Isles past Toronto.
Lee Stempniak notched the only goal for the Maple Leafs and Vesa Toskala was unimpressive in net, allowing four goals on 31 shots in taking the loss.
Toronto, which is 8-9-2 as the visiting team this year, had won two in a row on the road before losing to the Isles on Friday.
Washington earned a 2-1 road win over the Leafs on December 6 in the only meeting between the clubs so far this year. The Caps have taken two of three and four of the last six encounters overall, while Toronto has dropped four of its last six in D.C.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
